The participants would obtain an overview of the various intentions and ideas that the actors of the global anti-alcohol network had. On the basis of a number of case studies, the cultural, political and social diversity of the anti-alcohol movement would be emphasized; on the other hand the universal appeal of the idea of a necessary "fight against alcohol" would be analyzed. The participants would thereby be facing the question, in what social conceptions the alcohol was presented as a problem at all.
Last but not least, the role of the temperance movement in the formation of a global civil society would be examined. Today the International Red Cross is an institution which is renowned all over the world. This seminar proposes to discuss its emergence in the second half of the 19th century as well as the changes it went through up to the present and which made it one of the most important global players. Based on the example of the Red Cross students in this seminar will be acquainted with the conditions and circumstances of the emergence of international organizations in the course of the 19th century and how these were able to become effective.
Looking at the specific development of the organization from the 19th century onwards on the basis of original sources and secondary literature students will come to know people and processes that affected the changes of this international organization. Contested Nature: Film and Ecological Conflict. Weik von Mossner. We experience nature through media, through texts, images, and devices, through books, photos, and microscopes.
Within this ensemble the medium of film is of growing importance. In this course we focus on filmic representations of conflicts over natural resources, nature conservation, and human rights since the s.
The course's goal is twofold: On the one hand, participants will become acquainted with the global discourses and conflicts unfolding since the s over the use of natural resources, biodiversity and indigenous rights. Additionally, they will learn about the role of film in relation to such conflicts. On the other hand, we will study how to approach films critically. An exemplary selection of about 10 movies, including both fiction and non-fiction, will be screened in full length before being thoroughly discussed in class.
We will use this seminal report as a departure point to explore both more dated and more recent predictions on the global environment. We will contextualize these predictions in space and time and evaluate their significance for global environmental change. Students will get introduced into a central genre of environmental literature: environmental predictions.
By scrutinizing examples from different places and times we will discover the degree to which predictions, on the one hand, respond to historical contexts and, on the other hand, develop their own genre. We will ask the obvious question if environmental forecasts proved true or not.
Our main concern, however, will be to understand how such predictions were formed and what effects they produced.
Diccionario Histórico-Crítico del Marxismo
We will discuss their role in shaping both a global environmental consciousness and international regimes. This will allow us to better evaluate the impact of current and future predictions on environmental policy. Extra-European History and Global History. The fortnightly colloquium provides a forum for PhD students and postdoctoral researchers to present and discuss their current work. Kipphan, Handbuch der Printmedien, Springer Wilhelm, R. Heckmann, Grundlagen der Dokumentenverarbeitung, Addison-Wesley Introduction to the Philosophy of Nature Does not take place this semester. This lecture provides an overview of some of the systems of philosophy of nature since the beginning of experimental natural science. We will look at the basic principles of these systems such as "law", "chance", "cause", "space", and "time", and consider the conceptual constellations in which they appear as possible objects of a current philosophy of nature.
The lecture aims to sharpen the awareness for the difference between experimental and non-experimental modes of thought about natural processes. This is a typically modern conviction, that show that for most men today "nature" and "reality" means the same. That was not always so. Thus for most men in acinent greek nature ended at the moon, Beyond the moon there was world, but not nature.
That what startet behind the moon was supposedly more perfect than nature.
These differences of perfection dissappeared out of the understanding of reality in modern times. The lecture will analyse this development by looking at influential conceptions of nature and world in ancient and modern times.
